Unexpectedness

On September 9th, I have to turn in a poem on 'unexpectedness' to be work-shopped in class as part of my master's degree studies.

Poems are usually not scary things to write but this one, knowing who is going to read it and how critical that reading will be left me scared shitless. Something, over the past few days, probably blind panic ... concentrated my gaze and I've 'banged out' (what a nice phrase for inspiration) a few on that theme, and this is one:

Memento Mori

It should, really, be left
With the milk in the morning,
As expected and regular as
The need to turn the clock in the hall.

Or, if you like, given out with packets
Of soap in the strip -lit supermarket
Down the street; a prize for
Dirtying your linen – for living,

If you like. We could cold press it in plastic,
A prize toy for our kids
Who’d find it in the cereal box
Breakfast we serve every day;

As expected and regular as
The need to turn the clock in the hall
Although I’ve been forgetting
To do it, of late –

Then, perhaps, it would not be
Quite so sudden
Finding official letters like this
In the hall

Where the carpet watches
The clock and the heating hums
On, through it all.

It's 6.42 am, right now. Forgive me my bleary eyes but I'm starting to like this time of the day for writing and working.

Well..

With everything that's been going on lately* I've been thinking its time to set up a new  'Go-bag'.

You know what I mean, a small to medium knapsack with all the necessary items needed for the task in hand; kind of like the bags pregnant ladies keep by the door for when  they have to haul it to the hospital - nappies, baby grows and blankets.

Except, when it comes to this Go-Bag you'll need to swap all that crap for a heavy dose of doom, apocalypse and a really big gun:

That's right, I've been planning my:

Zombie Apocalypse Go-Bag!

Stylish Yet Practical
+

Deadly yet Slow

=

Alive Mizi!!

Now I, like all of us, try to maintain a decent level of Zombie Basic Awareness:

1) Always checking the Guardian webpage on the iPhone last thing at night for any 'unusual' stories about 'civil' disturbances etc. etc.

2)Planning out an escape route from any building I'm sleeping in.

3)Confirming nearby and at-a-distance rendezvous points in case of separation from loved/useful ones.

4)Planning evacuation transportation (always going with the horse method over truck)

However, I've decided its time to put a proper kit in place, so whilst the boyfriend and I were stuck in a ring-road traffic jam this afternoon I got to thinking/fantasizing/panicking about what we'd need to get us away from the brain-hungry hordes and wrote a list for him to pick up tomorrow:

"Go Bag"
Water purification tablets
Weapons - Cricket bat
Wire cutters
Knife
Water bottle
Chocolate bars
Dried fruit
Sports bra (nothing more annoying than unruly ta-tas when you're outrunning a Zombie)
Warm clothing
Trainers
Wind up radio (to listen out for Zombie Refugee Zones...)
Mini sleeping bags
Med Kit
Aviator Sunglasses
Gun + Bullets (endless supply)
Light sword
Cross bow. (Boyfriend's choice)

Only problem is, where to get the guns?

Mizi, come World War Z?

But should we be taking Guns at all? Firstly, the likelihood of finding a gun  is rare, acquiring one an overly complicated legal process and frustratingly, they need bullets to function. A bow or Cross-bow would be good, but I'd probably be rubbish with one and kill my side-kick before decapitating any of the damned ... which leaves swords, cricket bats and knives.

What would you take into battle with you? Melee, fire power or go old school with a blunt club?

Love and (Zombie) Kisses

* Please note that 'everything that's been going on lately' mostly refers to Mariah watching 'The Crazies' '[Rec]' and 'The Walking Dead' alone, having a series of paranoid dreams and then waking up last week to "The Riots".

Blueberry Cake and Cream Cheese Frosting

Firstly, I should let you know ... I can't find a way to get this photo of egg and cake mix  to move or have any text before it. The Gods of formatting say no.

Secondly, I blame this cake entirely for today's feeling over-bloated-ness, sugar coma shakes and general feelings of listlessness.

I also blame it for breaking my mixer - alas the cream cheese frosting proved too much for my little Kenwood model and after a bang! and a flash! The little motor whirred and whirred but the beaters beat no more. :(

This photo - I love. I also loved the cake without the American-style frosting which, I felt, totally overwhelmed it's mellow fruitiness. The frosting-less trimmings were a great deal more enjoyable with a brew.

As I don't have a bundt-ring I popped the mixture into a loaf tin (lowering the temperature and baking for about a hour) and my mini round cake pan and four baby loaf tins. I iced the mini-round and delivered it to my poor parents, who in their 60s and with diabetes really can't handle this sort of thing. My Mum has had a sugar free blueberry cake on her pin board for a while now and she looked forlornly at the cake asking if it was perhaps the same one?

Hm. No.

Word of warning. Shooting Cake photos in the back garden at 6 am before you drive off to Cornwall is probably not a good idea. Pre-coffee, not only did I manage to get a huge wodge of icing on my lens cap but I also managed to dig out a gash in the cake. Hence the closeups.
